Josiah’s Story

A little over 10 years ago my nephew and his two sisters were adopted into our family from Guatemala.  My brother and his wife had three children and felt the calling to embrace three more.  Overnight their family and love grew!

For years my nephew was robust, playing football with his brothers and being a typical kid.  Then he started throwing up.  Was it food poisoning?  The flu?

After visiting a doctor he was rushed to a children’s hospital where he and his family found out that he needs a kidney transplant.  Josiah’s kidneys never matured past the age of two.  He is incredibly lucky to be alive!   This is what his mother recently wrote:

If we hadn’t gone to Guatemala 10+years ago & brought Josiah & his two sisters back to become part of our family, things would have turned out very differently for him, as he is currently recovering from renal failure, directly connected to his malnourishment as an infant (kidneys did not grow past age 1-2), heading into short term dialysis & a kidney transplant journey. Thank You, Lord, for knowing that he would need us to be exactly where we are at this time in his life.  -Josiah’s mother

Josiah is the kind of kid who just makes you laugh.  He has a presence about him that is so unique.  He has that twinkle in his eye.  While most kids would be scared of having their world tip upside down overnight, Josiah is simply asking, “What is the new normal?” and referring to the surgeon by his first name.  🙂  He says that he is not going to cry until he hears the whole story.

The doctors have marveled at how robust my nephew has been, considering the condition of his kidneys, and attribute it to how well my brother and sister-in-law have taken care of him.  What a blessing to have him and his sisters part of our family!

Currently, Josiah needs 4 hour dialysis 3-4 times a week and is on a really, really strict diet.  The children’s hospital that is caring for Josiah has never seen anyone come in with such bizarre numbers.  His hemoglobin levels were so low they did not know how he had enough energy to walk into the hospital!  His normal potassium levels were the only thing that kept his heart pumping when it was surrounded with fluid. Although he is no longer in the hospital, Josiah and his family must travel to and from the hospital for his dialysis for months while they wait for the kidney transplant.

My brother and his family have always been a strong family in faith, guiding others to see the love of God through their ministries in The Arts Expressed.  Though this journey, that has just begun, they have been thankful for their faith in the goodness of God and have been humbly blessed by those who are praying for them.

What kind of impact would it have in Josiah’s life and healing to know that so many people care?
People he may not even know!!!!!
I believe in miracles.
